WHY WE ARE CHANGING THE GAME

“My blood and his blood are the same. That’s all that matters.”

— Coach Tom Walter

At the heart of Get In the Game is the idea that while we have many things that make us unique, at our core we are all people with unimaginable potential. It is when we take the time to learn about each other, we are at our strongest and able to take on the toughest challenges.

One Act Of Kindness Changes The Game

Get In the Game grew out of a single act of kindness when two men of different backgrounds—a young, Black student from a small town and a white coach of an elite college baseball team—came together to save a life.

As Kevin Jordan was starting his senior year of high school in 2009, it was easy to imagine the future that lay ahead. Committed to play D1 baseball at Wake Forest University and promising prospects for the MLB draft, it looked as though his dream of playing in the Majors was within his grasp. But that all changed later that year when he was diagnosed with a life-altering kidney disease. By the time he graduated, he wasn’t sure if he’d even be able to play baseball anymore.

But Kevin recognized that it was time for a daunting and potentially difficult conversation with his would-be college coach Tom Walter. He worried about the ramifications—he could lose his scholarship— but he had to tell his coach that he may not be able to compete for Wake Forest after all.

What Kevin didn’t know at the time was that the conversation they would have would change both of their lives in more ways than they could imagine. Two people in very different places in their lives with very different backgrounds, hopes and dreams would come together to teach each other—and the world—a very valuable lesson. Their blood was the same.

After Kevin reached out to share the news of his illness, Coach Walter urged him to come to Wake Forest in the fall and said they would figure things out together. The two of them met with doctors and talked about options with Kevin’s family. When they learned that there were no familial matches, Coach Walter didn’t hesitate to get tested. When he learned that he was a match, he knew exactly what he was going to do. He considered it one of the greatest gifts of his life to help a young man who had taught him so much in such a short time.

One day, in the weeks leading up to the surgery, Coach Walter shared with a dear friend his intention to donate his kidney to Kevin. His friend replied, “Can you do that? Isn’t Kevin...Black?” Stunned, Walter replied, “Yes. My blood and his blood are the same. That’s all that matters.”

That statement would resonate far beyond the life-saving transplant that followed. It’s the central theme to a story that America needs to hear—especially today when the country grows more diverse by the day and simultaneously, more segregated. We can celebrate our differences, have tough conversations, and learn from each other, but we’re all the same on the inside. We all deserve to be heard, respected, and cared for; we all deserve second chances, and we can all choose to get in the game and create positive change in the world.

After graduating from Wake Forest in 2015, Kevin’s bond with Coach Walter remained strong. In 2020, with the COVID-19 pandemic crippling the world and rising incidents of racial and social injustices leading to nationwide unrest, Kevin and Coach spoke often. Their conversations about the state of the world and the challenges faced by people of color made one thing very clear—  they could not sit idly by and wait for change. They decided to get back in the game and finish what they started nearly a decade ago — by using their story of shared blood to inspire young people and empower them to drive lasting, positive change when America needs it most.

“Once you get people to realize what they have in common, and start working together towards the same goal, the impact can be as big as you want at that point. You can transform communities. You can change lives.”
